Sendra, the Spanish boot
Someone who would think that the Wild West is now just history is very much mistaken. If we say: living history with us, we might be closer to the truth. True, the objects and customs that were so characteristic of this world and era were at their peak in the mid-19th century, but there could still be something enduring and timeless in them, if a part of them is still an integral part of our daily lives.
Fortunately, there were those who did not allow the Western outlook and material culture to die out. The enthusiastic guardian of these traditions is the Sendra company, which has been continuing the history of Western boots since 1913 and right up to the present day.
As we've touched on in several of our articles, the cowboy lifestyle drew on many roots, one of the most significant being the Spanish vaqueros, or cattle herders. So, it may not come as a surprise that one of the largest and best-quality manufacturers of Western and other boots, Sendra, is located in Spain.
The company was founded almost a century ago by Andrés Sendra, who, as the son of a Spanish tanner, was well-versed in the secrets of leather preparation. The idea for bootmaking came to him during a trip to the United States, where Sendra was captivated by the world of typical cowboy boots. Upon returning home, he established a small business in Almansa, where he crafted high-quality riding and mountain boots, which were comfortable and well-insulated for those seeking reliable footwear during that time.
The company's decades-long commitment to continuous improvement bore fruit for the Sendra family, who still own the business today. In 1962, they entered the American market, which has been their largest customer base ever since. The initially work-oriented boots, while preserving the cowboy design traditions, also incorporated new elements that kept pace with current trends. This led to the creation of styles such as motorcycle boots or street boots, known as urban boots.
Did you know?
...that the production of each Sendra boot involves 250 steps, and that approximately 90% of the manufacturing processes are still done by hand?
The unparalleled quality of this manual work, combined with nearly a century of experience at the factory, ensures the durability, comfort, and unique appearance of Sendra products. Furthermore, the company's "Goodyear welt" double-frame stitching technique allows for even stronger bonding of components.
Of course, the manufacturing technology wouldn't be enough—the selection of the right materials is equally essential for success. From the most well-known cowhide to exotic materials like python and crocodile leather, you can find a wide variety of materials in their offerings.
Did you know?
...that while Sendra's cowboy boots are undoubtedly the most sought-after, if you're interested in other styles, you can choose from a selection of 10,000 designs in total?
Sendra's products can be categorized into seven main groups:
- Classic: These embody the traditional cowboy boots with pointed toes, worn leather materials, and organic patterns.
- Biker: Motorcycle-inspired designs in black and brown, embellished with studs and buckles.
- Fashion: Their shape resembles that of traditional cowboy boots, but they incorporate new style elements, colors, and materials.
- Moccasins: The classic moccasin-style footwear of Native Americans in North America, made from python leather with leather straps and perforated leather surfaces.
- Accessories: belt, hats, wallets, spurs, and all other accessories to complete the authentic look!
With such a wide range of options, who wouldn't be amazed that Sendra has collaborated with some of the world's biggest fashion brands like Chanel, Donna Karan, Swarovski, and Dior?
